Story

I am Rusty Monson, Pitmaster and owner of Salt City BBQ. My BBQ career really began when my love of cooking met my interest in making the best barbecue I could, and I decided to give competition barbecue a try. We progressed quickly and gained some notoriety. After just a couple of backyard (amateur) competitions, we moved to the professional division. We racked up 2 Grand Championships (1st place), 4 Reserve Grand Championships (2nd place), and multiple top 10 calls in less than 2 seasons. To win a BBQ competition, you must use the best quality meat you can find. We still use that same discipline. We use only USDA Prime brisket and the best ribs we can source. We don’t skimp on quality, down to the mayo we use for our coleslaw dressing. Almost everything we make is from scratch, from the BBQ sauce to the sides to the rubs we use to season the meats. That truly sets us apart. My love for BBQ has continued to be a massive part of my life, and as a lifelong restaurant worker, I have always dreamed of opening my own place. Barbecue is a true passion of mine, and I am excited to use what I learned on the competition circuit to bring you the best BBQ in Utah. I promise we will continue to improve and reach our goal of helping put Utah BBQ on the map.
